Quarter 3 - Lesson 2:
On Zodiacal State - Intemediate Level 1

Considering the topic - A detailed study of zodiacal state or a planet's qualitative value, Morin begins Chapter II of Book 21 with a curious yet very important remark that should be carefully noted.

“When only one Planet occupies a certain House in the Natal Figure, it is principally that Planet’s action which will be felt in the sphere of activities to which the House refers, whether the Planet is in its own Domicile or in the Domicile of another Planet. Moreover, this action will be more powerful than that of the Planets which rule in the House or send aspects to it [as]  the determination by physical position is immediate,  [and] consequently the most effective.”

The study of a planet’s quality is a fundamental requirement in chart delineation, yet the intial sentence in this chapter begins with an emphasis on the quantity of a planet’s presence as the primary determining factor that addresses the issue of the strength of motivation. Zoltan Mason echoed this statement by always pointing out that the exaggeration of a planet’s influence is more dangerous than its zodiacal state. As he was oft to say, “Exaggeration destroys”. In other words, we must always regard the quantitative impact of a planet. A planet’s zodiacal state or what Morin’s calls its virtue is only showing how you are going about to acquire what  it is that you want from life, or in other words, the ethical or unethical means by which you obtain something in life.

Morin discusses the entire range of outcomes for the various affairs of life vis-a-vis the fortunate and unfortunate  houses based on the planet’s dignity. Based on  its sign position and accessory determinations, a planet can exhibit a range of quality from base, crude, and primitive to subtle, refined, and virtuous.

We begin our intermediate study by recalling Morin’s remarks of  a planet’s nature when analogous with the house that it occupies or rules and as a consequence realizing its significance for good or ill according to the harmony or discord caused by the planet. “If the planet’s own nature is contrary to the affairs of the house it occupies or rules, it denies or troubles the realization or destroys what it first produces, or makes the realization a source  of  misfortune”.

“In general, each planet that is in domicile, exaltation, or triplicity must generally be considered a benefic, whatever house it occupies, and particularly when it is helped by good aspects from the Benefics. On the other hand, each planet   that is in detriment or  fall is considered malefic whatever House it occupies or rules. The very influx of the Planet is corrupt and its destructive character will reveal itself even more energetically when posited in an unfortunate house.

Finally, the action of a Planet in mediocre Zodiacal state, (as when it is peregrine, in unfavorable aspect to Benefics or in favorable aspect to Malefics, etc.) will hold the middle ground between favorable and unfavorable effects.”

We illustrate the above with the charts of Martha Stewart, Billy Crystal,  Adolph Hitler, and O.J. Simpson.
