How you determine the sky: On Position, Rulership, Aspect, and Ricochet

Determining how much influence of the sky you receive is a key problem for the astrologer as it forms the basis for determining the strength of the motivation and drive of an individual. The quantitative impact of influence of the Planets are determined by the houses in four possible ways: Physical position, Rulership, Aspect, and Ricochet.

Priority-wise, the greatest influence of a planet quantitatively is by physical position as the impact of its influence is direct and immediate and not through the intermediary of a sign. Then comes impact by virtue of rulership over the sign found on a house cusp, followed by an aspect cast by a planet to a house cusp or planet within a house, and lastly influence by ricochet. That is. a planet impacts a house by virtue of being opposite a given house.

We consider the principal ways that a Planet can influence a House, be it the First House which represents the native himself or herself or any other house in a chart.

We know that the Planets influence our daily life but the sky, meaning the Signs and the Planets do not concur in every effect we undergo here on earth. Rather, the influence of each Sign and Planet is received (or delimited) in very specific ways, ways that are based on or determined by the Houses in a person’s chart.

The thrust of our lesson is to appreciate the QUANTITATIVE impact of a planet's influence based on the four principal ways a Planet can influence a house, i.e. physical position, rulership, aspect, and ricochet, We must appreciate that it is almost impossible for a house to be influenced by only one planet.

Typically two, three, or more planets influence the realization of the affairs of a house and as a consequence we want to tease out which among those planets (based on the former four considerations) has the greatest impact on the affairs of a house. After that, which of the others would be helping or hindering the former's impact.
