Quarter 1 - Lesson 7:
Introduction to Aspects

An aspect is a specific angular distance that exists between two planets or a planet and an important point in a chart such as the Ascendant. The relationship created by an aspect between two or more planets may be viewed as a partnership. Like all partnerships, there can be cooperation and/or conflicts when going towards a goal. Whether the partnership will be constructive or destructive is based on a number of factors including the nature of the planets involved, their quality, and whether the aspect form itself is harmonious or disharmonious.

This introduction is accompanied with comments on the role they play in regard to the Ascendant and to the Midheaven. Aspects to the Ascendant and to the Midheaven modify greatly the character and destiny of a person.

This lesson focuses on the qualitative modifications to the horoscope brought by a planet through aspect. Like quality, the quantity of a particular planetary influence also plays an important role in determining the motivations and drives of a person but consideration of aspects from the viewpoint of quantity will be discussed in a later lesson. Aspects are analyzed using several horoscopes to demonstrate the basic concepts of partnership and the issue of timing.

While there are numerous aspect forms, we will focus only on the five "major aspects" forms, i.e., the conjunction, opposition, trine, square, and sextile. It's not that the other so-called "minor aspects" are unimportant, but for the sake of clarity an the beginning of study, we will forego them for the moment.
