Quarter 1 - Lesson 4:
On the Archetype - The Ideal

The Wonder of the Archetype

The 12 Signs of the Zodiac taken as a unit are known collectively as the Archetype. "The Archetype is taken as a model for the human being".

In astrology, evolution means to go from a chaos to a cosmos, to go from disorder to order. The Archetype is a model of order. Correctly viewed, we have in the Archetype an image of how life should be organized ideally, how life should be lived ideally. It not only shows what constitutes ideal behavior on our part but also how we should relate to the physical world around us. It also shows how we evolve from a past to the present and how the present leads to the future. In other terms, we have in the archetype a model for cause and effect. We have in the Archetype guidelines for emotional and spiritual growth.

While participation in modern society steadily complicates our busy lives with ever increasing demands, the Archetype reveals the fact that life is very simple. Humans complicate it. We seem to have lost our bearings and to have forgotten what is important. The goal of life is to live. So the question naturally arises, how should we order our priorities so that we may simplify the living of life? What values should we hold as fundamental to live a successful and fulfilling life and to allow us to put everything else in context to those values? From the viewpoint of the Archetype, it's very simple.

At the start of our discussion on the Archetype, the answers to these questions may appear paradoxical, but to live a simple life, free of conflicts, free of guilt and hurt, requires that you take a partner to help build up the future and to build up a home. Some people may say this statement is obvious but how many of us consciously order our lives based on these values. These are fundamental values which can never be forgotten; everything else is secondary. No matter if you are a man or a woman, no matter what your cultural background, these are the fundamental efforts required by life from you.

As long as you crave the usual needs of every living thing, the drive to survive and the drive for pleasure, life requires this commitment of you. This is the case for every human being, regardless of time or culture. In our modern world, we seem to have forgotten this request by life of us. This request was made of those people who lived in antiquity, this is the case for us now, and it will be the same for those who will live a thousand years from now. This basic message jumps out at you when you study the Archetype.

The late Zoltan Mason of New York would say, “When I have a client I always have three charts before my eyes, that of the client, my own, and the Archetype. The Archetype gives the answer”.
