About Book 21 Richard Baldwin's translation from the Latin of Book 21, the crown
jewel of Morin’s 26 volume magnum opus, Astrologia Gallica has made available to students of astrology
the most valuable of topics in astrology, a rational approach to horoscope
delineation. Morin was a reformer and an apologist; the greatness of his
tradition is to give to students of astrology a cogent set of “tools” free of
excessive and arcane terminology. This he expressed as a clearly defined set
of rules that allow practitioners to think as astrologers. Morin's "Theory of
Determinations" provides a coherent explanation to human destiny based on the
stars that is free of superstition and fatalism. By applying Morin’s well defined canon in a
systematic and structured approach when examining a chart, the practitioner
can easily quantify and qualify the planetary forces present. This ability to
measure planetary influences in such a manner forms the practical basis to
evaluate or judge the chart. From an inspection of the Table of Contents one can
quickly infer how Morin unfolds his explanation on how the stars are received
in very specific ways by the human being. Section One gives an
unusually clear overview of the interrelationships that exist between the
zodiac, planets, and houses that typically is discussed superficially in
modern texts. The whole topic falls under a word coined by him called DETERMINATIONS,
a term synonymous with the phrase, "to delimit". The idea is that
the signs, planets, and houses mutually condition or limit each other in very
specific ways. Section Two expands upon the theme of determinations; it begins
with an extensive explanation of the traditional topic of planetary dignities.
Dignity or what he terms a planet’s cosmic state refers to the qualitative significance
of a planet when found in one of the six possible planetary dignities of Domicile,
Detriment, Exaltation, Fall, Triplicity, or Peregrinity. This explanation goes far beyond any
material found in any contemporary Astrology book in the English language. Succeeding sections of the
volume take up the topics of house combinations, aspects, house derivation,
and chart comparison. The final chapters of the book end with a summation of
the book’s content expressed as a series of considerations when examining a
particular planet in a chart.
