Lectures:

  • The Long and Short of the Mayan Calender
The "end date" of the Mayan calendar occurs on 12/21/2012. Interest in this topic has been strong for several years now and will no doubt increase, yet misinformation about it persists. Self-appointed prophets offer their own mostly invented doomsday messages and the media encourages such marketable fear. I will offer a different perspective. The Mayan calendar, properly called the Long Count, is actually a kind of astrology that developed in Mesoamerica about 2,500 years ago. In my presentation I will outline the basic astrological system of the Maya, look at what is know about Maya prophecy, and consider carefully the meaning and implications of 12/21/2012 in context of the Long Count.
