Quarter 1 - Lesson 4
One of the traditional uses of Astrology lies in its ability to provide us with an objective appraisal of ourselves. If we do not know or cannot recognize our own character, we will never grow as a person because we have no knowledge of what we may lack or what we must correct.
The blessing of astrology is that we have in its study an objective model of the Creation, the Creator's hand, and our ideal relationship to both. This model is called the Archetype. The word Archetype should not be confused with the word as theorized by the late psychologist, Carl Jung. Its meaning and use in astrology is completely different. The expression "Archetype" refers to the twelve signs of the zodiac viewed as a whole or as one integral unit.
This lesson will introduce the Archetype.
Using the Archetype, we will show how a human being stands in relation to space and time, the two objective dimensions of the mind. Using these frames of reference, the Archetype can be viewed as the physical world or it can be viewed as the Creator's hand, or in an even more amazing way, the Archetype also depicts our ideal relationship to these. It portrays an ideal self-image for ourselves as beings that possess the faculty of choice. Today we will emphasze the latter two points.
The Archetype is figuratively a book on Nature and its laws; and arguably, without an understanding of the Archetype, the practice of astrology is a hollow shell. The value of astrology as a guideline for living and as a means to rectify character is pointless without a deep appreciation of the Archetype.
